So You Think You Can Dance?

Back home from a TV appearance in Atlanta. Chillin’ on the couch eating spinach salad and watching So You Think You Can Dance. The dancers, amazing. The choreography, incredible. Tonight, they highlighted footage from National Dance Day. On July 28, people from all over the world danced for the cheer joy of it.

I’ve blogged about it before, but I’m a zumbite. Zumba is a great form of exercise disguised as dance. So you sweat but have fun doing it. Most days.

A couple weeks ago I was working through some sadness that kept me from class. I had spent a couple of days crying off and on and wore myself out. Usually, I’m able to push through whatever it is and hit the dance floor anyway. But, on a rare occasion I can’t. I simply can’t muster the joy. And I’m big on it. Joy, that is. After all, I wrote “There is Joy in the Lord” and have experienced that joy as my strength. Years later came “Restored (The Grindstone Song)” out of practicing joy, choosing it daily. And more recently, “There Will Be One Day” dreams of a joy like we’ve never known. The Joy of Heaven.

But, guess what?  After bowing out of a few classes to allow myself time to process, time to put up the Kleenex, I was back with my smile on. Back with my dancing shoes and pigtails. Back with me.

I write this to encourage you. If you’re hurting, sad, tired, or barely hanging on…you will dance again. I promise. But, don’t take it from me. Hear the rhythm of David’s feet. He knew a thing or two about dancing…

“You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy…” Psalm 30:11

So you think you can dance? I know you can.You must.

For there is a time to mourn and a time to dance…

Start the music,

  • Great word, Cheri!

Thanks for being real. One of the many things I love about you!

It’s hard to keep a good woman down. I think Satan’s just mad because your music is changing lives. I had days like that after my book came out. It just happens.

I love how you run to Jesus.

    Keep dancin’!

    Big hugs across the miles!

  • Thanks for continued encouragement, Cheryl. Hittin’ a zumba class tonight! Gonna get my joy on.

    God’s girl,

My precious daughter (Wendy, who dances with you) sent this to me. It was so timely. Today I attended the funeral of a friend, the young mother of 3, who lost a 12 year battle with leukemia. I don’t feel much like dancing today, but I know that “Joy cometh in the morning”. I will dance tomorrow–not with my feet, perhaps, but with my soul. Thanks!
